Get a Sales Person & Grow your Business

Our line-up of top speakers continues with an interview with Philip Gerber from Houston, Texas.
With over 40 years in sales and marketing as well as owning over a dozen companies, Phil Gerber has developed a significant portfolio. He has utilized the principles developed through his experience to make his sales teams the most successful in their respected industry. He has literally “been there and done that”.  As Bottom Line Consultants, Phil has been helping organizations improve their sales and marketing for over 10 years.  His simplistic approach to sales has enabled even the novice salespeople to become overnight stars.  His experience in retail, wholesale, and sales to both consumers and businesses gives him insight into a multitude of sales issues and problems.
Phil was a frequent guest on a Houston radio talk show discussing sales.  He has also written articles for a number of internet newsletters. His book “Cut the B.S.” was published in December of 2007. When he’s not playing golf and running his businesses, Phil loves to travel with his lovely wife Carol.

Philip' new book A Business Owners Guide to Managing Sales People is available now. You can see the intro and contents on the following link.
http://www.freado.com/read/7445/a-business-owners-guide-to-managing-sales-people

I've read through the book and I can tell you it's written in a plain common-sense style and covers every aspect so you'll employ the right person, give them good training and then go on to motivate and manage them on the job. As a life-long professional salesman I find this book to be a practical  manual that no small business owner should be without. Technology has changed dramatically over the last 20-30 years but people haven't. We do still bleed when we are cut and are still afraid of the unknown. Sales ideas and techniques have altered but there is no dramatic change: people are still people. It's just that good training is difficult to find.

You can order the book, just click here

Join Philip Gerber on my show on 1st July. As sales is such a vital part of any business operation I'll be asking Philip if he'll take part in a phone in on a future programme. Listen in on this conversation that could take your busness to new heights.

Running a national company? This book would be ideal to present to your front-line management and sales staff. Looking for a promtional gift for small business customers? This might be it. You'd be doing them a good turn.

Trade Associations can Help You as a Business Owner

Do you belong to a trade association? Some are for a particular trade whilst others cover wide groups. Thev Federation of Small Businesses is the largest business association in the UK with around 23,000 members.
I welcomed Mike Jones, Secretary of the Local Branch of the FSB to talk about trade associations in general and the FSB in particular.

If you have views on the FSB or others then please let us know.

Rob Warlow turned the tables today on the business person looking for a bank loan and asks "What about you? What does that bank manager think about you when he sits down with you?

Have you been watching Mary Portas with her show "Mary Queen of Shops" where she looks at small businesses to see where they can improve. She is very direct and in your face and is like a walking jar of Marmite. You either love or hate her.

Last week she worked with (or should that be against) a baker who hadn't changed her outlook or style for 30 years. It wasn't a very successful outcome. Mary took the shop-owner to visit Hobbs House Bakery and meet Tom Herbert.  Tom's family have been baking bread in the Cotswolds for five generations and Tom continues to win awards for the firm, Hobbs House Bakery. Tom will be guesting live on this show on Tuesday 29th June when we invite you to call in or to send in any questions. This will be a 30 minute programme and one that I'd recommend. Watch out for more information and visit the website at
http://www.hobbshousebakery.co.uk

And here's a link about Tom's  Sheperd's Loaf.
http://www.hobbshousebakery.co.uk/aboutus/news/141-perfectloaf
On BBC4, 25th March 2010, Tom Herbert goes on an epic quest for the perfect loaf, and so the Shepherds Loaf is born. Tom's journey helps him to come up with what he hopes will be a competition winning entry for the National Organic Food Awards: an enormous, two kilo, white spelt, sourdough loaf big enough to feed a small village, made using his family's 55 year old sourdough, organic spelt from Somerset, Cornish sea salt and water.

ENDORSEMENT:
Todd Trethowan says "I had made it my mission to taste as many sourdoughs up and down the country as humanly possible. The quest for the best is over. We think that the Shepherds loaf is a cult loaf in the making." Todd, Cheesemaker and Monger, uses The Shepherds loaf to create the best cheese toasties in the world! Every Wednesday at St Nicholas's market in Bristol on the Trethowan's dairy stall.

QUOTATION:
"I've got a party in my mouth", random at Saint Nicholas' Market, Autumn 2009

SPECIFICATION & NUTRITION:
YEAST and DAIRY free

STORAGE:
This loaf will last at least a week, and is best on day 3.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:
Perfect for tartines, Croc Monsieur, weekend toast with marmalade, and with anything and everything until every last slice and crumb has been enjoyed. A Hobbs House Bakery loaf so big you'll want to share.

This week the Mary Portas progamme took us to Corfe and a small village shop that was trying to be everything to everyone: where the owners were on a treadmill and losing up to £6000 a month. With a bit of inspiration from Mary and eventually enthusiasm and then huge dollops of energy the shop has turned into something much different. A hub for the village stocking a range of local produce. A complete transformation.  I spoke to Chris Porter on Wednesday and he told me that he'd received over 3000 e-mails in the 2 days since the programme was shown and several letters. On the phone I could hear a real buzz in the background. Chris and Juliette have promised to talk with me early next week and we'll hope to broadcast that conversation next Thursday, 24th June. If you want some pure magic listen in, I think you'll find some straight talking from a market trader.

Biz Talk Radio 9th June 2010

So far so good. The second Show ran overtime and was really crammed. Another lesson. Makes me realise that 30 minutes means everything has to be edited down to give you the best. And too much of me means less of my guests and what they have to offer. And if you've listened to previous shows the content is rich.

Rob Warlow's book is available through many retailers now and Amazon. It is probably unique in that it covers every aspect of preparing and having that interview with the bank manager. It is written in an almost conversational way so it's easy to read and if you just dip in you'll pick up tips and tricks on every page. At over 250 pages you'd imagine this will be heavy reading and full of dull accountancy stuff that none of us really want to know about but nothing could be farther from the truth. I highly recommend this book.

As I mentioned before I'm delighted to have Rob Warlow on board as I know he has some great ideas and information that will help any small business.

I've met Rob on several occassions since he returned to the UK and have tried to help him into the business community. He is now heavily involved across South Wales and is running seminars as well as being a regular speaker in the networking arena.

Rob has just published his book, "Bank Sharp: How to get a Bank Loan" and it's now available on Amazon. Just click here http://tinyurl.com/37l6ks3  After the huge problems many businesses have experienced with banks over the last 2 years this might be just right to hit them with, after all it's over 250 pages thick!

Rob is running a seminar in Manchester, Cardiff and Watford. This is an intensive day long seminar and the link is

In addition I'm looking for current news items that are useful to small business owners. If you have a news item, something relevant that you'd like to talk about, or a comment then let me know. E-mail me at ask@biztalkradio.co.uk,  text/call 07976364681 or leave a comment on this page.

Please join me on Tuesdays and Thursdays and if you'd like to host your own programme or be a sponsor of a regular show get in touch. Are you an expert in your field? Tell us about your specialism if it's relevant to small businesses. Your profile will rise. You'll get more business. It's quite painless and in fact can be a bit of fun.
